ABOUT THE MEDICATION
Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, a prescription-only injectable weight-management medicine licensed in the UK for eligible adults. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist administered once weekly using a pre-filled pen.
semaglutide
Mimics a gut hormone involved in appetite, fullness, stomach emptying and blood-glucose regulation.
pre-filled pen
Treatment and dose escalation are managed by the prescribing clinician alongside dietary and lifestyle support.
Made by Novo Nordisk, Wegovy contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic but has a separate UK licence for weight management. Treatment begins at a lower dose and is increased gradually under prescriber guidance so the body can adjust.
HOW IT WORKS
Wegovy activates GLP-1 receptors. This can promote fullness, reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying and influence the brain’s hunger signals.
WHAT IT MAY SUPPORT
Individual responses vary. Treatment decisions, dose changes and monitoring must be managed by the prescribing healthcare professional.
CLINICAL ELIGIBILITY
Wegovy is generally considered for adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or above, or 27 kg/m² or above alongside a weight-related condition. Eligibility is always decided by a registered healthcare professional through a full clinical assessment.
The criteria above are a general overview. Only a registered prescriber can determine whether Wegovy is appropriate for an individual.
PRESCRIPTION PROCESS
A registered prescriber must complete the clinical assessment and issue the prescription. Iris Health then verifies, dispenses and delivers it.
Consult a registered prescriber in person or through a properly regulated online service, providing relevant health information.
The prescriber reviews clinical suitability and, if appropriate, issues a prescription at the selected starting dose.
Our pharmacist confirms prescriber authority, patient details, dose and clinical appropriateness before dispensing.
Medication is packed in validated cold-chain packaging and dispatched with tracking and delivery updates.
UK HOME DELIVERY
Iris Health provides refrigerated, tracked Wegovy delivery to eligible UK addresses. Every delivery uses validated cold-chain packaging designed to hold 2–8°C throughout transit.
STORAGE GUIDANCE
Keep Wegovy pens refrigerated at 2–8°C before use and do not freeze them. Once removed, follow the confirmed time and temperature limits below and always check the patient information leaflet enclosed with your pen.
Used pens contain a needle. Dispose of them in an approved sharps container, not household waste. When travelling, carry the pen in hand luggage and use an appropriate medical cool bag.
Storage instructions can be product-specific. If you are unsure whether the medicine has been stored correctly, contact the pharmacy before using it.
SAFETY & MONITORING
Gastrointestinal side effects are commonly reported, particularly when starting treatment or following a dose increase. Serious symptoms require prompt clinical advice.
The patient information leaflet is the authoritative source. Do not stop or change medication without guidance from the prescribing clinical team.
| Side effect | Reported frequency | General guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea | Very common | Often more noticeable early in treatment; discuss concerns with the clinical team. |
| Diarrhoea | Very common | Speak to a pharmacist or prescriber if severe or persistent. |
